Another Year Down

2011 brought a number of personal changes and experiences in my life - this was also the year I met Glenda Jackson and watched all the Best Actress nominees, which I will eventually do some rambling review on the role of women in the Best Actress category, but until there is time for that, what about the future Oscar nominees?

The best thing about this year is all of the races are COMPLETELY UNPREDICTABLE. There is no clear frontrunners in any category (when was the last time this happened?) and the movies I have seen thus far have been unusually strong.

Here's who I think the Best Actress nominees will be:

And since I've already seen 3/5, I can safely say this lineup is incredible. The only other possible happening would be Glenn Close getting in over Charlize or Tilda, otherwise this is the lineup.

Also this year, I fell in love with a new actress, as I'm sure her 1,226 movies have made other people do:

I'd say the possibility of Close getting a nod over Swinton is quite a likely (if not probable) one. Less likely, though still possible, is Theron getting dropped too (perhaps in favor of Mara).

On a slightly unrelated note, what would you say is the best movie you've seen this year?

Ugh, I've only seen 4 major contenders this year and they all contain Best Actress contenders :P

So glad you love Jessica Chastain! Her performance in The Help is probably my favorite of the year so far.

Best Actress is the race that I'm the most problem with. I really could see I'm starting to think Close will get a nomination and Theron might get left out but I'm so unsure.

Yes, it will be a travesty if the 3/5 I've seen are left out, especially Charlize :(

Davis is fantastic, I defintely want to see Charlize and Michelle.

I agree this is quite an interesting year in its unpredictability with both the possible winners and potential nominees being still quite open in most of the categories.

Who do you think will WIN the Oscar for Best Actress? Viola, Meryl and Michelle ALL have a great chance of winning and the races are VERY unpredictable, which is, as you said, the best thing about it. I've only seen Viola and Great Glenn. Both of them were wonderful, especially Viola. Secretly, I'm hoping that Great Glenn doesn't make it because she'll not have to lose then.

Viola has grown to be one of my absolute favorite actresses. She's just heartbreaking as Aibileen. I wish her the Oscar.

But I wish Meryl to win as well. It's REALLY about time for her to get it. And the same for Michelle though I'm sure she will have many more opportunities.

At the moment, I'm predicting Viola because the Globes and SAG will go for her probably (SAG may go to Meryl, though.)

I have Tilda's film but haven't got time to watch it.

You know I loved Jessica Chastain as well, but Octavia Spencer was even better, IMO. :) How did you like her?

Do you know if My Week with Marilyn is available on the internet? Anywhere...

ha, well I didn't say I loved her in The Help ;)

But, yeah, I can't wait to start reviewing all of them. I'm hoping like hell Tilda and Charlize get in - how can they not 0_0

I feel that Tilda is safe, Charlize is definitely NOT. Her closest rivals are Great Glenn and Rooney Mara. I feel, though that Great Glenn's SAG nod would have come anyway and her Globe nod might have been just a filler and out of respect. It's a terrific performance but not an awards magnet (unfortunately).

Great Glenn might become like Julianne Moore for A Single Man.

Davis, Streep, and Williams are assured. I think Charlize will make it,and Tilda as well. Glenn is very probable, but I think she'll get snubbed in favor of Theron.

Viola for the win!!!!!! Will you tell us your thoughts on her?

Hey Sage!!!! Does your email still work? I tried to send you a message on there, but you never responded, and I've been getting a lot of spam from your account,

If it isn't, can you send me a message on Youtube? I miss chatting with you!

Sage Slowdive said...

No, it should work - go right ahead.

Who do you think are the other actresses who still have the chance, albeit small, to get in to the top 5?

Aside from Close, Swinton, Theron, and Mara, who are clearly wrestling right now for the remaining slots, I think Olsen, Knightley, Jones, Colman, and Wiig still has the teeny tiny chance of getting a surprise nom.

Sage Slowdive said...

Ugh...Rooney Mara. Let's hope she's not a possibility.

dinasztie said...

Why? Isn't Mara good? Have you seen her?

I think she has a good shot at being nominated.

Sage Slowdive said...

Just saw her actually...and don't expect anything amazing.

dinasztie said...

Hmmm. Have you seen Great Glenn as Albert N.? I think she was terrific. Very quiet and subtle. What did you think (if you've seen her)?

Do you think she can get in?

I'll be quiet about Glenn for now, since she is still a potential Oscar nominee and I want to review this year.
